Spring Cleaning Recycling: How Blackpole Recycling can help
Spring cleaning season is almost here! If you are planning a declutter after the winter months, find out how we can help.
As spring approaches, you may be starting to plan a declutter. Spring decluttering sorts through the winter months mess and results in a home that is more organised and easier to clean. Read on for some handy spring cleaning recycling information that can help you get organised and dispose of your waste items sustainably.
Clearing out your garden, sorting through belongings in the home, going through the contents of your garage, undertaking a new home renovation project; all of these activities can produce large quantities of waste.
Making frequent trips to your local tip in your vehicle is a waste of valuable time and energy, and if you dispose of significant amounts of household waste or bulky items in your regular wheelie bin, they will end up in landfill, which we all know has detrimental effects on the environment.
Hiring a skip to dispose of all your waste at once is both a cost-effective and time-efficient solution, and you can be confident that your waste will be responsibly recycled with a minimal amount ending up in landfills when your skip is collected.
Regardless of the time of year, evaluating your possessions and purging unnecessary items can be beneficial for any household. That being said, spring remains a popular time of year for a declutter, and sees the average household produce more waste than usual.
During spring in a city the size of Worcester, around 230 tons of extra waste are produced in a single day! As we declutter our homes, many people take the spring clean as a chance to throw out the old larger items they have like old furniture or appliances. Hiring a skip makes processing and disposing of your unwanted household items as convenient as possible.
Ethical waste disposal is essential to us here at Blackpole Recycling, and we are proud to recycle 98% of all the waste we receive. Read more about what happens to skip waste.
At Blackpole Recycling we have a range of different skip sizes available for hire that will help you to carry out your spring cleaning recycling quickly and efficiently. Our skip sizes are as follows;
4 yard skip - A versatile option for anyone who needs to dispose of a moderate amount of waste. Find out more about 4 yard skip hire.
7 yard skip - A popular choice for kitchen and bathroom renovations, light construction work, garden clearances, or general household rubbish. Read more about 7 yard skip hire.
14 yard skip - Ideal for full office or house clearances, large home renovation projects, and a wide range of commercial and construction projects. More about 14 yard skip hire.
Determine the amount of waste you need to dispose of: Before hiring a skip, estimate the amount of waste you need to dispose of. This will help you determine the right skip size for your needs.
Choose the right size skip: Our skip sizes range from small 4-yard skips to large 14-yard skips. A 4-yard skip is suitable for small DIY projects or garden clearances, while a 14-yard skip is better suited for full house clearances or larger construction projects. If you're unsure about what size skip you need, consult with the skip hire company for advice.
Consider your location: When hiring a skip, consider where you will place it. If you have limited space, you may need a smaller skip that can fit on your driveway. If you don't have space on your property, you may need to apply for a permit to place the skip on the road. We can manage the application process to apply for a permit on your behalf.
If you’re not sure what size skip you need, our team of experts are always on hand to offer advice and guidance. We specialise in all things recycling here in Worcester and the surrounding areas, to a 20 mile radius.
However, there are a few important things to consider when hiring a skip:
Hazardous materials, such as chemicals and paint cannot go in your skip. You’ll need to check with your local council what the best option is for disposing of these. If you have asbestos, to dispose of this you will need an enclosed skip hire and to be handled by a specialist asbestos handler (which we can arrange for you). Large electrical items, such as fridges and freezers also cannot be disposed of in a skip so alternative arrangements will need to be made for these.
New legislation from the Environment Agency has fundamentally changed the way we manage sofa disposal, and the processing of other upholstered items here in the UK. These regulations, brought in from January 2023, mean that upholstered domestic seating containing Persistent Organic Pollutants Regulations (POPs) must be incinerated and not recycled or disposed of in a landfill. This means that these items can no longer be put into a skip for disposal. Read more about these important changes and how they affect skip hire.
When hiring a skip you’ll need to consider where you are going to put it for the duration of the hire. If you don’t have a private driveway and the skip will be on the roadside, you will need to apply for a skip permit to allow you the permissions to leave the skip in a public location. We are more than happy to apply and manage a two week or four week skip hire permit on your behalf should you require, for a small additional fee. Get in touch to find out more >
Hiring a skip is an excellent way to speed up your spring cleaning recycling allowing you to get it all done in a day or a weekend if you wanted to. But if your spring decluttering is going to be carried out over several weeks, a skip can still save you time by minimising the number of trips you need to do to your local tip or other disposal facilities. Our standard skip hire is from one day up to two weeks, but if you would like to hire a skip over several weeks, just let us know when enquiring.
When decluttering or spring cleaning, you may need to dispose of large and heavy items, such as furniture or appliances. However, lifting these objects into a skip can be challenging and even dangerous if not done correctly. Here are some tips for safely lifting heavy objects into a skip:
Use the right equipment: If you're lifting heavy objects, it's important to use the right equipment to avoid injury. Consider using a dolly, trolley, or hand truck to move the object to the skip. These tools can help distribute the weight of the object and make it easier to lift.
Get help: Don't try to lift heavy objects on your own. Ask a friend or family member for help, or consider hiring professionals to do the heavy lifting for you.
Use proper lifting techniques: When lifting heavy objects, it's important to use proper lifting techniques to avoid injury. Bend your knees and use your legs to lift, rather than your back. Keep your back straight and hold the object close to your body. Avoid twisting your body while lifting.
Clear a path: Before lifting the object, make sure there's a clear path to the skip. Remove any obstacles or debris that could cause tripping or slipping hazards.
Be mindful of the skip's weight limit: Make sure to check the weight limit of the skip before filling it with heavy items. Overloading the skip can be dangerous and may result in additional fees or fines.
By following these tips, you can safely and efficiently lift heavy objects into a skip, making your spring cleaning recycling project a success.
