11 year-old Nathan suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. His disorder means he has numerous tubers (benign tumours) throughout his body and specifically on his brain, eyes and kidneys. As a result of these tubers, Nathan suffers from severe intractable epilepsy which is fully drug resistant. Nathan can have up to 200 seizures a day. These are completely unpredictable and occur both day and night. Nathan also has autism and global development delay, so has the functioning age of a 9-12 month old.
Mum Emma & Dad Jonathan are now full-time carers for Nathan as he requires round the clock care and can’t be left alone, leaving little of their time to be spent with older sister Kira. Nathan’s bedroom is located on the 1st floor of the property, with the only access to his room being via the stairs. Emma & Jonathan are increasingly worried about his safety as he gets older and more dependent on them. Nathan currently requires occasional use of a wheelchair and specialist doctors at Birmingham Children’s Hospital have expressed that Nathan could be one severe seizure away from needing one full-time.
With constant hospital visits and without a safe space for Nathan to live comfortably, the family home is in desperate need of attention to convert their house into an accessible, safe and useable space for the whole family.
